Lake Taupo

Huka Falls
Thunderstorms continued through the night; dry by morning but with some rainy looking clouds around. Went on the Huka Falls walk from Thermal Spa Park, on the outskirts of Taupo, along the river to the Huka Falls. Very pleasant walk through woods with river views. Huka Falls impressive (200,000 litres per second). River surges and tumbles through a narrow gorge. Rain started as we were leaving the falls to walk back but we'd had the foresight to take our brollies. Sun back out again by the time got back to the car so had our picnic lunch in Thermal Spa Park.

Noted that blue sky seemed to maintain itself over Lake Taupo, whilst clouds gathered around, so headed back to the Lake and went for a walk along the shore. Another pleasant and sunny walk. Passed Hot Water Beach where numerous hot springs flow, steaming into the lake - very curious and seriously hot. Lots of birds on the water, including black swans and shags but not able to identify others. (Should have bought a NZ bird book.)
Lake Taupo
Returned back to the B&B for a pause before dinner (A. ironed the laundry while J. dealt with his email.) Heavens opened again. Went down town for another excellent NZ dinner.
